In the mini-press conference conducted at Diosdado Macapagal High School (DMHS), the Education Program Supervisor I, Filipino, Dr. Cherry G. Vinluan, addressed the learning loss and the possible solution to learning gaps in the Philippines, on May 13, 2023.
This initiative was emphasized by DepEd Order No. 12, s.20 or the Basic Education Learning Continuity Plan because according to United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizations (UNESCO), education must continue.
Vinluan opens the worldwide issue by stating, "Marami ang nakababasa, totoo 'yan pero ang problema ay hindi nila nauunawaan ang kanilang binabasa."
She outlined the Reading Across Subject Areas for Better Academic Students' Achievement (RASA-BASA) program, one of the projects launched by the Division of Pampanga which boosts the students' academic excellence.
This project was implemented by the Division of Pampanga after the Philippines ranked last among 79 countries that joined the PISA 2018.
The stated project's goal is to provide educators with a comprehensive framework for integrating reading activities across subjects, ultimately aiming to enhance students' academic achievements, improve their reading abilities, and foster a deeper understanding of the content they encounter throughout their education.
Through RASA-BASA, the students not only gain subject-specific knowledge but also develop their analytical thinking and critical abilities.
